Description of the Challenge Concept:

 

The main concept of the Green Ideathon contest is to encourage VET students to examine real-business problems of the energy sector and provide innovative ideas for solving them.

Main Goal: Reduce the energy consumption and waste produced at the school premises

Description of the Challenge Concept:

 

In this challenge, the class XX of the vocational school will develop a phased programme to reduce the energy consumption, waste and eco-footprint at school within a project led by their class teacher.

The stages are defined as follows:

1.     Research waste reduction and eco-footprint.

2.     Identify areas of improvement at school and brainstorm green solutions.

3.     Create a huge poster and hang it at the school premises and ask everyone – teachers, students, vendors and parents to sign the pact and comply with a greener, more environmentally friendly school. The pact should include a few key messages that summarise the aims.

4.     Invite company representatives of the vendors at school who are responsible for food supply and cleaning.

5.     Engage a dialogue with them what they are already doing to improve their environmental friendliness and pitch ideas, what they could do better to reduce waste. Ask them to sign the pact.

6.     At the end of the school year, hold an event and review the changes that were implemented. Thank everyone for participating and make plans to continue the movement into the next school year.

Points 1-3 will be implemented in a workshop facilitated by Auxilium on October 12th 2023. The other steps of the way will be carried out autonomously by the class and the school.

Result / Desired Outcome: Reduced energy consumption and waste at school premises.

 

Title of the Challenge: GREENOVATION Idea Contest

Main Goal: Develop ideas for a real Erasmus+ project in the green VET sector

Description of the Challenge Concept:

 

Each year, organisations can apply for Erasmus+ projects. But what if this time, the VET students are in the driving seat?

E.N.T.E.R. has reached out to the vocational school for an idea contest.

The challenge for the students is to come up with concrete ideas that will be submitted as an Erasmus+ project in March 2024 in the VET sector.

The prompts of the challenge are:

Green Environment – European Values – VET/school/WBL/youth

The workshop will be implemented on October 12th 2023, facilitated by Auxilium. The company E.N.T.E.R. will then produce a project summary based on the best ideas, which the students can then approve. If all parties are on board, the project will be submitted in March 2024 and if selected for funding, implemented together with the students in their next school year.

Result / Desired Outcome: Project summary / application to be submitted for the Erasmus+ deadline 2024

 

Title of the Challenge: Optimization of By-products for the food industry

  • Reduce the impact and optimize the costs of seafood transformation industry.
  • Design a supply chain and a methodology for the extraction of chemical components from by-products of seafood transformation for the production of 100% eco-friendly bioplastic.
Timeframe: September 2023 - September 2024
Description of the Challenge Concept:

 

Reduce the impact of the food industry (specifically the seafood transformation one) by developing stabilized bioplastic product of the extraction from seafood by-products of chemicals functional to develop a 100% biodegradable packaging.

Specifically, the initiative aims at extracting chitin from shrimps and prawns transformed by the SME cooperating in the program, to therefore work on a stabilized formula able to obtain stabilized bioplastic.

The Green Collider partner will support the research throughout the cooperation period by supporting the fundraising action and the external monitoring of the research project actions.

Result / Desired Outcome: Short-medium term: A stabilized bioplastic suitable and to be certified for food packaging usage.

Medium- long term: A decreased amount of by by-products ending the cycle in the landfill.

 

Title of the Challenge: Optimization of resource consumption and reduction of chemicals in wine production/grape harvesting

Main Goal: Optimize the water consumptions while reducing the use of chemicals on field applying prevention and forecasting technologies.

Description of the Challenge Concept:

 

Develop a reliable and low cost monitoring system to support farmers in the everyday decision making on field, in order to support them in the optimization of resource consumption (e.g water) and act to prevent fungal diseases, parasites and more in general diseases which can either harm the production process and force the producers to act with chemicals in the field.
Result / Desired Outcome: Short-medium term: Developed of a low-cost monitoring tool to apply to the vineyards, to support the forecasting and the monitoring of water consumption.

Medium- long term: reduction of the rate of exploitation of aquifers, decrease of glyphosates and nitrates in the soil

Description of the Challenge Concept: Rationale – to understand and reduce the company's contribution to climate change. At the same time, they help them to find out which business activities consume a lot of energy, thus helping them to reduce energy and resource consumption.

GHGs Challenge - Measuring greenhouse gas emissions for Recuperat-ion

Challenge Overview:

  • Recuperat-ion, a local company that specialises in the commercialization of nutritional supplements. It is making great efforts to become more sustainable and has already implemented some environmentally friendly practices. Therefore, it wants to go a step further and measure its greenhouse gas emissions accurately.

Task:

  • Help Recuperat-ion set up a system to measure its greenhouse gas emissions.

Steps to guide this task:

1.     Step 1: Work with Recuperat-ion to identify the sources of emissions (of greenhouse gases) within the business operations and collect relevant data on emissions from each source (e.g. energy consumption, transport, production processes and more).

2.      Step 2: Research different tools (e.g. online calculators) that will help you analyse the collected data and convert it into CO2 equivalents (standardised units). Present a report summarising your findings and recommendations.

3.      Step 3 - Propose innovative ways in which Recuperat-ion can reduce its emissions. Make proposals and present a plan for continuous monitoring of emissions to track progress over time.

Result / Desired Outcome: A comprehensive report and guide on how to measure and monitor Recuperat-ion’s greenhouse gas emissions

 

Title of the Challenge: Paper and waste recycling challenge for VET students

Main Goal: Design (and implement) a practical system for recycling paper and other waste in the SME workspace to help them implement sustainable practices.
Timeframe: September - November 2023
Description of the Challenge Concept: Rationale:

Edensol is committed to sustainability and is looking for innovative solutions to reduce waste and promote environmentally friendly practices in the workplace. By working with Edensol, VET students will learn how to design and implement a paper and waste recycling system. This challenge offers students the opportunity to contribute to reducing waste and resource consumption while improving their problem-solving skills.

Steps to guide this task:

1.     Step 1: VET Students are divided into teams and start working with Edensol to understand their current practices and goals related to sustainability.

2.     Step 2: Design a practical and sustainable system for recycling paper and other waste in the work area.

  • Consider factors such as waste separation, collection bins, recycling processes and staff engagement.
  • Develop a proposal for the recycling system.

3.     Step 3: (Implementation) Work closely with Edensol to implement the recycling system you have designed.

  • Give training and guidelines to Edensol’s staff on how to use the system effectively.

4.     Step 4: Produce a comprehensive report summarising your actions, results and sustainability recommendations for Edensol.

5.      Step 5: Each team presents their achievements and the recycling system in front of a jury (Edensol representatives).

  • Reflect on the challenges you overcame, the lessons you learned and the importance of sustainable thinking in VET education.
Result / Desired Outcome: This challenge empowers VET students to apply sustainable thinking and practical skills to address real-world problems.

Description of the Challenge Concept: Presentation of activities aimed at raising awareness among young people for a sustainable and green future, which have been carried out in the last year at School Centre Škofja Loka - Secondary School of Mechanical Engineering and preparation of a short video (approx. 3 minutes) in cooperation with the company Komunala Škofja Loka and  CPI - Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for VET.

Preparation of a promotional video for the participants in our school's annual event - Tech Days, attended by students of the third cycle of primary school (age 13-15 years):

  • Preparation of an idea and plan for separate waste collection in a public institution
  • Preparation of appropriate facilities for special waste
  • First steps to reduce waste in the school
  • Results - what have we improved during the trial period?

Title of the Challenge: Rainwater harvesting and utilization in schools

Main Goal: The educators affiliated with all three Vocational Training schools, including experts from Hidrofilt Ltd., Gerián-Tech Bt., and Európa Konzorcium Nonprofit Kft., are developing a challenge and task package that requires the application of green competencies. Students in small groups, with the support of their teachers and experts from Európa Konzorcium Nonprofit Kft., will devise solutions to these challenges. Engaging in friendly competition and utilizing practical examples, student teams can enhance their green skills in a playful yet practical manner.

VET students from all three participating schools will prepare a complete plan for the rainwater collection and usage for their own schools and present their findings in front of a professional jury.

Timeframe: October - December 2023
Description of the Challenge Concept: The first challenge of the Green Collider competition comes from Hidrofilt Ltd. During the factory visit to Hidrofilt Ltd., various water technology products and their manufacturing processes will be showcased. The company also collects and utilizes rainwater, providing visitors the opportunity to witness these methods and gather ideas from the solutions used. In addition to the factory visit, students will gain further valuable information through a classroom presentation.

The task: Develop and present a proposal package for rainwater utilization in your school!

We welcome solutions for rainwater retention and collection, as well as creative ideas for water usage. While technical documentation-level accuracy and detail are not mandatory, it is advantageous if the students can support their proposals with various calculations.

Result / Desired Outcome:
  1. The elaborated proposal package should be presented verbally on the final day of the competition, on December 12, 2023, at 2:00 PM. For the presentation, the use of MS PowerPoint, Prezi, or any other freely chosen presentation technique is recommended.
  2. The students will progress in green competences.
  3. Schools will receive funding from Hidrofilt Ltd. to (partly) implement the proposed rainwater retention, collection, and usage methods.

 

Title of the Challenge: Circular economy at home

Engaging in friendly competition and utilizing practical examples, student teams can enhance their green skills in a playful yet practical manner.

VET students from all three participating schools will prepare personal action plans for circular homes. Their proposals will be presented in front of a professional jury.

Timeframe: October - December 2023
Description of the Challenge Concept: The second challenge of the Green Collider competition comes from Gerián-Tech Ltd. This company specializes in the manufacturing of metal structures, using various metal alloys, some of which are made from recycled metal waste.

Beyond companies producing various products and services, individuals and households can also strive to produce less waste and ensure that the products and services they buy and use align with the principles of a circular economy. In a classroom presentation, students will gain further useful information about the circular economy and its impact on individual lives.

The task: Circular economy at home

Student groups shall develop, gather, and present consumption habits and behaviours that help transition individual lives and homes to a lifestyle in line with the principles of a circular economy.

From dining to clothing, transportation to household management, learning, entertainment, work – the topic touches every aspect of our lives. We expect simple methods and creative ideas from you on how to make homes and individual lives more sustainable.

Result / Desired Outcome:
  1. The ideas should be presented verbally on the final day of the competition, on December 12, 2023, at 2:00 PM. For the presentation, the use of MS PowerPoint, Prezi, or any other freely chosen presentation technique is recommended.
  2. The students will progress in green competences.
  3. Participants may adapt new consumption habits.
